13 October 2021: All Hallows’ Evesong
midst crackling flames
and cackling mirth
and rancid rot
that lifts from earth
the spirits swoop
and swarm and play
for at long last
arrived their day
to romp and tromp
and hoot and
boo and scare live
souls both old and new
to slink in shadows
play in rain
that tears at leaves
and makes trees plain
to relish sacred
timely death
who culminates
and fosters rest
to teach that brief
mortality
enforces raw humanity
preventing living souls
to breathe a single
love-dispossessed breath
oh welcome the macabre
refrain all hallows’ eve
sings unrestrained!
